The Abilene Public Library system is in the middle of a major transformation to better serve the community. The Main Library, which has been located at 202 Cedar Street in downtown Abilene for years, is relocating to a brand-new space at Abilene Heritage Square on South 1st Street. Set to open in May 2026, the much larger new facility covers around 65,000 square feet and will include a dedicated Texas History and Genealogy Room, a makerspace with tools like 3D printers and laser cutters, and a podcast studio. The centerpiece is a three-story atrium with a hanging glass sculpture made from hundreds of hand-blown pieces, some of which were decorated by Abilene residents.  

In the meantime, the South Branch Library at the Mall of Abilene (4310 Buffalo Gap Rd) is open seven days a week with a large collection for all ages, public computers, private study rooms, and regular programming like storytimes and craft workshops. Two brand-new branch locations have also recently opened inside the G.V. Daniels Recreation Center and the Sears Park Recreation Center, expanding library access to more neighborhoods.
